‘You are Dalits, politics is for us’: TDP MLA’s video goes viral, alleges tampering

MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar did a ‘palabhishekam’ for a statue of Ambedkar, in order to prove he was not casteist. “You are Dalits. Why do you need politics, instead of thinking about how to raise your kids with affection?” TDP MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar is seen making this declaration in a video that has gone viral in the last 48 hours. And now, the MLA has alleged that the video has been doctored by rivals YSRCP. Prabhakar was reportedly speaking in the context of a Dalit leader, who had joined YSRCP, opposing Prabhakar’s visit to the constituency. You are Dalits. Meanwhile, rivals YSRCP have been demanding the sacking of Prabhakar for his casteist speech. Prabhakar for his part has accused the YSRCP of carrying out a ‘slander campaign’ against him to bring him down. “The video has been edited. Action should be taken against those who made it viral,” he said, after he filed a complaint with Eluru police on Wednesday and sat on a dharna at Eluru junction near Dr BR Ambedkar’s statue.

IIT alumni are storming into politics to fight for India’s oppressed castes

The Indian general election is a year away, but the country’s already in the grip of multiple state-level polls. The BAP’s members, many belonging to the SC, ST, and OBC communities, have even quit their white-collar jobs. Led by Naveen Kumar, a 2015 graduate of IIT-Delhi, the party embarked this week on a social media campaign, with posters carrying images of iconic social reformer Bhimrao Ambedkar and former president APJ Abdul Kalam, among others. This isn’t the first time that IIT graduates have given politics a shot. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who founded the Aam Aadmi Party, was a student of IIT Kharagpur. The IITs are among the hardest universities to get into in India, given the rigorous selection process, and there are reservation policies in place for students from the SC, ST, and OBC communities. And what sets the BAP apart is its focus on caste discrimination, which, the members argue, remains the norm in India. Especially so in education and employment and despite the quota policy designed to uplift the country’s oppressed communities. “Existing parties are using deprived masses as a vote bank,” he told the Economic Times newspaper on April 24. Informed by their own experiences of injustice while growing up, studying, and working, the BAP members’ goal is to end caste discrimination and ensure dignity for the SC, ST, and OBC communities.

The Politics Of Judicial Appointments

One of the judges was transferred to the Madras High Court. The second judge is now being objected to by the government to be brought to the Supreme Court. Justice Rajiv Shakdher delivered the judgment in the Priya Pillai (2015) case, which broke far more ground than the Supreme Court’s decision in Maneka Gandhi (1978). The second judgment was delivered by Justice KM Joseph, who in 2016, struck down the hastily imposed President’s Rule in Uttarakhand. Hiring - Onboarding - BI Reporting - … Zenefits Learn more The vice of President’s Rule in the States has a long history of abuse and debilitating democratic mandates. Post Nehru, its use has been rampant with every Central Government of every political hue abusing this power to appease the State party apparatchiks. The transfer of Justice Rajiv Shakhder and the government’s refusal to accept the collegiums verdict of KM Joseph are continuation of the naked politics and its nebulous role in the process of judicial appointments. It has a long history. Justice HR Khanna, Justice VS Malimath, Justice ML Pendse are just some of the names. For, after all, India is the most enduring experiment on constitutional democracy in post-colonial history.
