IDA Documentary Awards Winners Find Parallels Between Work and Current Political Climate

While the topics of the nominated films varied widely from civil war in the Balkans to American politics in the 1960s, many saw the main messages of their work reflected in current political times. The Independent Documentary Association held its 34th Annual Documentary Awards on Saturday night at the Paramount Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony was hosted by Rikki Lake and presenters included Barry Jenkins, Kathy Bates and Emily Deschanel. While the topics of the nominated films varied widely from civil war in the Balkans to American politics in the 1960s, many saw the main messages of their work reflected in current political times. Dawn Porter, director and producer of the Netflix documentary series Bobby Kennedy for President, told The Hollywood Reporter what the project has to say about America today. “1968, the year that Kennedy was assassinated, was one of the most tumultuous times in American history," Porter said. "Our collective feeling is if we can get through that, the Vietnam, war, civil rights and riots all over the country, we can survive a difficult administration. We have been here before and we have survived.” Golden Globe-winning actor Jeffrey Wright, who is a producer on We Are Not Done Yet, a short documentary film that profiles veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars as they rebuild their lives and contend with PTSD, told The Hollywood Reporter why this was a story that he felt needed to be told. I don’t think there are too many people in our country who have actually heard the voices of the men and women who have served in those wars," he said. The evening’s other big winners included three-time Academy Award winning filmmaker Julia Reichert, who was given the career achievement award, and the Netflix docuseries Wild Wild Country, which won for best limited series.

Some of these recipients won’t get the award many might expect them to receive. 2018 Turkey Awards - Segment three There are only four more left – two more legs and two more gizzards. Country Music Will Talk About the Hurt, but Not the Politics

Some who survived Las Vegas were there Wednesday night in Thousand Oaks. “As far as country music goes, it’s sort of no-man’s-land to really go out and make a political statement,” said Andy Albert, a songwriter based in Nashville who writes mainly for country performers. Over the last couple of years, the genre has shifted again to a gentler, less brute kind of male star: the gentleman. “It’s just sort of in the water, it’s just understood that none of these artists are trying to use this as a soapbox,” Mr. Albert said of the songs he writes for other musicians. And I think it becomes more universal when you’re able to do that.” With mass shootings regularly blanketing the news, gun control has remained one of the most intensely partisan issues in the country. Among Democrats, the opposite was true, with 83 percent thinking the group promoted policies that were “bad” for the United States. Country stars have tended to limit their statements after shootings to condolences for the victims, avoiding any gun debate. The musician Kane Brown is releasing an album called “Experiment” on Friday that includes the song “American Bad Dream.” Mr. Brown was at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas last year and performed the night of the shooting. “Before, you never saw on the news there was a shooting today,” he said. Awards, addressed the Las Vegas shooting during last year’s show, which included the faces of the victims in the “in memoriam” segment.

Taylor Swift opens 2018 American Music Awards days after breaking political silence

The 28-year-old star—who switched out of her red carpet look, which featured a silver mirrored mini dress with matching thigh-high boots, for a sparkly black-and-red bodysuit—was joined by more than a dozen dancers for her performance while a large snake hovered behind her. Moments after her opening number, Swift, who is nominated for four AMAs, returned to the stage to accept the "Tour of the Year" award. Later in the show, the singer, who took the stage once more after winning best pop/rock album for her album "Reputation," left fans wondering after she teased that she is "even more excited about the next chapter." "Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me." Swift said the congresswoman "voted against equal pay for women. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry." "These are not MY Tennessee values," the "Fearless" singer added, noting that she will be voting for Democrat Phil Bredesen for the Senate, and also for Rep. Jim Cooper, a Democrat who's running for re-election. Following Swift's rare political statement, new voter registration surged, according to data obtained by Fox News from Vote.org, which showed that new voter registration spiked both nationwide and in the star's home state of Tennessee. Kamari Guthrie, the director of communications for Vote.org, told BuzzFeed News that the organization was “up to 65,000 registrations in a single 24-hour period” since Swift’s post.

Jesus At Trump Tower: The Father Of Lies Award

“It’s about time you took note of the lying media, constantly making stuff up about me. “But perhaps not in the way you are thinking.” “What is this award?” asked Trump. We are awarding you the lifetime achievement ‘Father of Lies’ award,” said Jesus. “Father of Lies?” said Trump. “The Father of Lies is one of many titles people have given to Satan, along with The Great Deceiver, The Evil One, The Adversary.” “Those are great titles,” said Trump. Bigly exceptional.” Trump was beaming. “We put your name in a big dark book with previous winners. “Previous winners of the Father of Lies award are not in heaven,” said Jesus. So I will be the first winner of the award in heaven?” Trump was beaming. @realDonaldTrump Just heard from the Big Guy that I have won a major award.

Donald Trump awards himself Medal of Honor for theoretical bravery

President Donald Trump has awarded himself the prestigious Medal of Honor for ‘probably running into mass shooting unarmed’. The ceremony will take place later today and will be only the third such medal Trump has handed out during his stint as president. While presidents don’t typically award themselves medals, President Trump decided to make an exception for himself for ‘extreme bravery in a theoretical situation’. ‘I would have run straight into that school and tackled the shooter, even if I didn’t have a gun. Believe me, he wouldn’t have known what hit him,’ said the former theoretical NFL linebacker. The ceremony will begin with Trump placing the medal around his neck before regaling the media with other brave things he might do if the situation was purely theoretical. ‘If North Korea was ever stupid enough to send a nuke our way, I’d probably just fly into the sky and block it before throwing it right back at them,’ said the proud president.

We Award President Trump And His Cabinet Some “Alternative” Oscars

The newly appointed President seems obsessed with cartoonish depictions of gold and wealth. In fact, we all know President Trump dreams of gold, just take one look at this lavish apartment. He’s purported to be a man of great taste, perhaps even the greatest taste. No one has better taste than him. Except, that’s not exactly true. Somehow President Trump has amassed a cabinet of absolutely underqualified and deplorable people in a sad attempt to “drain the swamp.” Now, we know the press isn’t allowed to sit with Sean Spicer, but we couldn’t resist sharing some Oscar fever with the new White House administration. As you’ll see in the video above, we’ve taken some time to create and award some Alternative Oscars just in time for this Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards. Congratulations to all the winners, especially Mike Pence who looked absolutely shocked to hear that he had won the Alternative Oscar for Best Actor.
