Nadler announces sweeping document requests, says Trump obstructed justice

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, who would oversee any impeachment proceedings against President Trump, announced that he will submit more than 60 document requests to the White House and Justice Department on Monday -- a barrage that Nadler called the opening salvo in new and wide-ranging investigations. “Tomorrow, we will be issuing document requests to over 60 different people and individuals from the White House to the Department of Justice, Donald Trump, Jr., [Trump Organization CFO] Allen Weisselberg, to begin the investigations to present the case to the American people about obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power,” Nadler, D-NY., said on ABC News' "This Week." He added that the goal of the probe was "to present the case to the American people about obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power." The evidence, Nadler maintained, was that Trump called the Mueller probe a "witch hunt," allegedly "tried to protect [fired national security adviser Michael] Flynn from being investigated by the FBI," and supposedly admitted that he had fired FBI Director James Comey "to stop the Russian thing" in an NBC interview. And in fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself — I said, you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story. When pressed by Stephanopoulos as to whether Nadler would accept a possible report by Mueller finding no improper or illegal collusion by the Trump campaign with Russia, Nadler suggested he would not -- and then proceeded to unload a litany of unrelated complaints against the White House. We’ve seen all the democratic norms that we depend on for democratic government attacked by the administration." Nadler added that "the Mueller investigation, No. Nadler's committee has also called in the former acting attorney general, Matthew Whitaker, and plans to question him again in the coming weeks. Last month, Neal held a hearing in which experts discussed the authority under current law for Neal to make a request for any tax returns to the treasury secretary.

Democrats: Cohen’s testimony will be a map to key witnesses and investigations

Michael Cohen raised a litany of allegations against his former boss, Donald Trump, in explosive testimony before Congress this week, implicating the president and his inner circle in potential criminal wrongdoing on multiple accounts. House Democrats seek interviews with Trump's children and close allies Read more Now House Democrats plan to use Cohen’s revelations as a blueprint to summon key witnesses and pursue investigative avenues they say their Republican counterparts have ignored. No one is off limits, including Trump’s adult children Donald Jr and Ivanka or the gatekeeper to his finances, the Trump Organization executive Allen Weisselberg. “If there were names that were mentioned, or records that were mentioned during the hearing, we want to take a look at all of that.” The issues raised by Cohen, who for nearly a decade worked as Trump’s personal attorney and fixer, were myriad and spanned several of the continuing investigations being overseen by special counsel Robert Mueller and federal prosecutors in the southern district of New York. In the aftermath of Cohen’s testimony, House Democrats zeroed in on at least three major lines of inquiry: negotiations over the construction of a Trump Tower in Moscow during the 2016 campaign; hush money payments to women and attempts by the president and his team to engage in an alleged coverup; and claims by Cohen that Trump knowingly engaged in insurance fraud. Michael Cohen: key takeaways from the former Trump lawyer's testimony Read more Cummings said the House oversight committee would seek interviews with both Donald Jr and Ivanka. “Cohen’s testimony opened the door to a plethora of questions.” In his testimony on Wednesday, Cohen submitted as evidence checks from Trump’s personal bank account that he said were reimbursements for the hush money. Cohen alleged on Wednesday that the then candidate Trump was aware of the meeting and told him Donald Jr would never have signed off on it without first seeking his approval. Among the key questions for investigators, Tribe said, would be whether there was “extrinsic evidence to corroborate or deny Cohen’s account of the conversation between Trump and Don Jr”. According to Cohen, Weisselberg presided over several hush money payments involving Trump – some of which are not publicly known.

Trump and ‘collusion’: what we know so far about Mueller’s Russia investigation

Paul Manafort: Trump's ex-campaign chair agrees to cooperate with Mueller Read more “I think these people know everything already,” said Credico, who was there to answer questions about his old friend Roger Stone, a sometime adviser to Donald Trump. “They have all the information.” “All the information” grew significantly on Friday, as Mueller announced that the former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort had entered into a cooperation agreement with prosecutors requiring him to testify indefinitely about any matter of interest to investigators, potentially including the inner workings of the campaign, its contacts with Russia, Trump family business dealings in Russia or his own contacts with Russia. His central mission is to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and alleged cooperation by the Trump presidential campaign. Will Roger Stone be indicted? Roger Stone says he may soon be indicted in Trump-Russia investigation Read more Following the money Federal prosecutors are investigating suspect money flows during and after the election, although it is unclear how much of that investigation is in Mueller’s purview versus how much is being run, for example, out of the US attorney’s office for the southern district of New York. Prosecutors are investigating large overseas money flows following the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower between campaign officials and Russian operatives, and also following the November 2016 election, BuzzFeed reported on Wednesday. Money flows originally tipped prosecutors off to the crimes of the former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, who pleaded guilty last month to fraud charges and campaign finance violations in a prosecution referred by Mueller. Trump and obstruction of justice Mueller is also believed to be investigating Trump, who denies all wrongdoing, for alleged obstruction of justice. The president’s legal team, led by Rudy Giuliani, appears to be in negotiations with Mueller. He has contradicted himself, saying last week that Trump would refuse to answer any questions about obstruction of justice, and then saying “we’re not closing it off 100%”.

Trump opens window into his rage with Mueller attack

(CNN)Donald Trump is giving Americans a glimpse of the fury raging inside him as a pivotal moment nears for special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, and different strands of political and legal vulnerability swirling around the President become ever more threatening. The Robert Mueller Rigged Witch Hunt, headed now by 17 (increased from 13, including an Obama White House lawyer) Angry Democrats, was started by a fraudulent Dossier, paid for by Crooked Hillary and the DNC. Trump tweeted Sunday. Trump's tweets on Sunday represented his most specific attempt yet to discredit any findings of the Mueller investigation into alleged election collusion with Russians, following clear signs that his previous assaults have been effective in hardening the opinion of GOP voters against the probe. And ironically, given the President's chosen method of attack Sunday, The New York Times reported last week that Mueller was examining Trump's tweets to see whether they show malicious intent to obstruct justice in the firing of former FBI Director James Comey. "Is Robert Mueller ever going to release his conflicts of interest with respect to President Trump, including the fact that we had a very nasty & contentious business relationship, I turned him down to head the FBI (one day before appointment as S.C.) & Comey is his close friend," Trump said in a second tweet. Trump's attacks on Mueller followed yet another extraordinary assault on the media by the President after he broke details of a private meeting he had with A.G. Sulzberger, the publisher of The New York Times on July 20. Trump tweeted on Sunday afternoon. Taken together with the Mueller offensive, the tweet represented an escalation of Trump's strategy to discredit the integrity and moral standing of any institution that will ultimately help to shape a national consensus on his conduct. The 4.1% GDP growth rate figure will form the centerpiece of Trump's midterm election argument to voters that he has unleashed a new age of American prosperity that Republicans hope will prove more important to their choice than the ominous developments in the Russia probe and the uproar perpetually whipped up by the President's convention-shattering style.

Week In Politics: Michael Cohen, Mueller, Rosenstein

We begin the hour by sorting through the week with NPR's Ron Elving, our senior editor and correspondent at NPR. ELVING: Well, you know, it seemed like there was Mueller news pretty much every day this week, Scott. So they're planning to exchange visits to each other's capital city next year. SIMON: We have no idea if the Mueller probe will be over or not though, right? And if sustained over the entire year, this will be a banner year, indeed, for the American economy. ELVING: It could be, indirectly, because Facebook was a principal platform for a lot of the Russian disinformation campaign during 2016. So Facebook had the biggest one-day loss in market history. SIMON: Did we, maybe without noting it, pass a corner this week in which the Russia investigation - Mueller, Michael Cohen, all of that - has gone from examining if there was obstruction of justice to actual collusion with Russia by the Trump campaign? SIMON: NPR's Ron Elving, thanks so much. ELVING: Thank you, Scott.
