A Kennedy Challenges a Party Elder

The Story:

Joseph Kennedy III, the grandson of Sen. Robert Kennedy and the grandnephew of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, announced recently that he is a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for the seat in the US Senate now held by another member of that party, Sen. Edward Markey. The nomination will likely be decided by a primary on September 15, 2020.

Background:

Ed Markey is 73 years old and has been either in the House of Representatives or the Senate continuously since 1977. This makes him the second longest-serving member of Congress from New England.

Joseph Kennedy turned 39 on October 4. There is certainly a generational aspect to this challenge, just as in other parts of the country younger Democrats are challenging party elders for other seats. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who will turn 30 on October 19, notoriously won her seat in the House, representing New York’s 14th district, by knocking off a party elder, Joe Crowley, at the conclusion of Crowley’s tenth term in that seat in 2018.

The Thing to Know:

Whichever candidate gets the Democratic Party’s place on the November ballot will be heavily favored to win the general election as well. The Republican Party is weak in Massachusetts. The last time Markey ran against a Republican opponent he won handily, 55% to 45%.

The Progressive ‘Squad’ : A Test of Unity

The Story:

Frequently lumped together in discussion of a so-called progressive “squad,” four Congresswoman, each elected to the House for the first time in 2018, are diligently moving the politics of the Democratic Party to the left. Though neither of these four is running for President, they are in conjunction influencing the candidates for that post, and drawing the fire of irate tweets from the incumbent.

Four Members:

The four squad members are: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY), Ilhan Omar (MN), Ayanna Pressley (MA), Rashida Tlaib (MI).

A conservative commentator on Fox News has called them “the four horsewomen of the apocalypse.”

Yet key policy issues may test their cohesion as a group. One such issue: whether Americans who support a Palestinian State ought to advance that cause by boycotting Israeli-made products, working to exclude Israel’s performers and academics from international events in their fields, and similarly working to isolate that country from the rest of the world.

The Thing to Know:

On July 23, the House of Representatives voted on a proposition to condemn the international boycott-Israel movement. Three of the four Squad members voted against condemnation. But Pressley, the fourth (and the one of the four with the most public policy experience prior to November 2018) voted yes, for condemnation, and so against the practice of boycotting Israel.

Sanders and AOC Propose Limits on Consumer Debt

The Story:

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have jointly proposed a new federal law that would limit the interest rates that consumer lenders or credit card issuers may charge: setting a cap at 15%. This is in response to what both Sanders and AOC see as a crisis of consumer indebtedness.

Other Provisions

The bill would have considerable bite for the lending industry. At present the average rate on credit cards is above 17%.

Other provisions of the bill would allow the Federal Reserve to make exceptions to the cap, thus permitting borrowing above 15%, but only if necessary to keep institutions afloat, and even then only with the proviso that any such exception lapses after 18 months.

“This is a moral issue,” Sanders said. “Every major religion on earth has condemned usury.”

The Thing to Know:

Sanders is seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination for President. AOC has become very prominent in some circles in that party since her June 2018 defeat of Joe Crowley, a member of the Democratic Party’s House leadership, in the primary for the seat she now holds. For Sanders to propose this bill in tandem with AOC will associate the two, and will perhaps increase Sanders’ credibility with AOC’s admirers.

Op-Ed: The dangers of political showmanship

FILE - Protest rally

“If we really want to know who is responsible for the mess we’re in, all we have to do is look in the mirror. You and I own this country and we are responsible for what happens to it.”

– Ross Perot

Hyde Park in London is located near the entrance to Buckingham Palace. It’s been hosting free concerts, festivals, fairs, noble duals, and events since the 1500s. During the 19th century when Europeans were passionate about social and political change, people from all over Europe fled to Hyde Park to share their grievances. Today, activists from around the globe flock to Hyde Park to voice their views about anything and everything freely. It has been dubbed the free speech zone for “bewailing.” On any given day, there is enough hot air generated to launch the Goodyear Blimp.

America has been a free speech zone since our founding. Free speech led to The Revolutionary War. It fought wars. It stopped bad wars and ended slavery. It provided equal opportunity. Activists didn’t just talk the talk but walked the walk and made social and political history in America. Their voices were the call to action. Their battle cries were not criticisms for self-enamoration, but for a cause greater than they were. They finished what they started. They weren’t like some activists today that fill social media with so much hot air that climate changers accuse them of global warming.

One of the virtues for those seeking political and social asylum in the New World was freedom of speech and assemblage. America was founded on activism by men of honor whose actions spoke louder than their words. Thomas Paine, our forgotten founder, walked from township to township to motivate passive colonialists to revolt for freedom. During the Revolution, he inspired our soldiers to keep fighting when defeat was on the horizon. If it wasn’t for Paine’s activism, we’d still be subjects instead of citizens.

“A man’s actions say much more than his most noble words.”

– Thomas Paine

Throughout our modern history, the activism of true leaders has made our nation stronger and far better than it would have been without them. Dynamic speakers like Ronald Reagan and Dr. Martin Luther King inspired the actions of others to bring about social and political change that made America a better place for everyone. Real leaders create more leaders than they have followers because:

“There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.”

– Ronald Reagan

American activists responded to abuse of power by politicians like Huey Long, Franklin Roosevelt, Barack Obama and others. Activist legislators in FDR’s party revolted against his attempt to stack the court with hand-picked justices. Obama, who pledged to unite our nation, divided it soon after he took office. When he laid…

Bronx Republican preparing 2020 run against ‘Bolshevik’ Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Fed up constituent announces she's running to oust Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Fed up constituent announces she’s running to oust Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

She’s a medical journalist and former publicist with no political background, but Bronx native Ruth Papazian, 61, sees it as her duty – however much a long shot – to swipe the seat of 29-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the 2020 congressional elections.

“It became clear that if I didn’t step up to fight for our district, we’d end up with yet another passive Republican candidate who didn’t bother to campaign,” Papazian told Fox News. “And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hasn’t lived in the district since early childhood. Those of us who stuck it out, and actually live here, care about our future, and need representation.”

Ocasio-Cortez used her deceased father’s Bronx condo on her voter registration since 2012, but has since denied reports that she doesn’t live in the Manhattan borough.

Meanwhile, Papazian – the daughter of Egyptian immigrants who currently lives with her widowed mother – has accused the headline-making freshman representative of never responding to concerned people in the district “who have serious questions about her unrealistic and unworkable policies,” and claims that she “has a mostly unstaffed office in Queens, and when constituents call her office in DC to ask for help, they get phone recordings with full message boxes.”

But for this Bronx Republican, it is the incumbent’s economic policies that are the driving force behind her own political aspirations.

“It has been galling listening to Ocasio-Cortez push really hackneyed big government ideas that have failed around the world. These include her Green New Deal and Medicare for all,” Papazian said. “This district is home to first and second-generation immigrants. It is a middle-class district, because our families came here, worked hard, bought houses, and flourished. Many of us come from families that escaped socialism. No one wants it here.”

And as Papazian fears, some U.S. businesses also view the Ocasio-Cortez-led socialist economic plug as a possibility rather than a delusional fantasy.

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., returned to Twitter on Wednesday night after a trip to Puerto Rico and wasted no time in ripping into Republicans over management of the federal Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Like many public systems, GOP want to rip the battery out + say the whole car doesn’t work, so they can sell it for parts,” the congresswoman wrote. “Fully funding the VA & hiring to fill the *49k vacancies* is a clear path to improving it – not auctioning off our vet care systems to for-profit companies.”

Trump declares Mueller-probe win, tweeting out NY Post front page

Hogan Gidley: I'm not going to be lectured on truth-telling by anyone in the mainstream media

President Trump, reiterating his firm belief that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation had been a political and unsuccessful witch hunt, tweeted out the New York Post’s front page and its bold, declarative headline: “TRUMP CLEAN.”

The page showed Trump smiling alongside the phrases, “No crimes committed,” and “Dem hoax destroyed.”

The tweet was something of a victory lap for Trump, after Mueller’s report said there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him with either conspiracy or obstruction of justice.

Despite what Trump’s tweets may have implied, the battle was far from over, however, as congressional Democrats continued to push their own follow-up investigation. House Judiciary Committee chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., subpoenaed the unredacted Mueller report and requested that Mueller testify before…
