Corporate activism in politics creates business strategy dilemmas

Businesses that include both publicly traded and private companies, and small-business owners, seem to have decided to make themselves relevant in the political arena. Other examples include Kellogg’s decision to pull some advertisements from Breitbart.com, which then called for a boycott of the company’s products. And small-business owners and corporate managers are people, too, with their own political party preferences. Corporations and small business owners can design a marketing strategy (as Nike seems to have done) that will attract one group and hope that the fallout from the other group will not impact sales. Is this the best strategy for the owners of public and private firms? Public firm managers are agents of the owners and are persuaded by positive or negative incentives to take on projects that are in the best interests of companies’ common shareholders. The danger is that with political activism on the part of firms, they can alienate a group of individuals who may also be its customers. It is true that Nike’s revenues increased after the ad, but many people burned Nike products and one mayor banned the sale of Nike products before retracting it. In the middle of this political hurricane, here then is a smart strategy for all firms, whether they are public, private or small businesses: Keep out of politics when it involves the welfare of its stakeholders, be it common stock holders, private firm or small-business owners. To maximize owners’ wealth, firms and small business owners need to attract customers from all parts of the political spectrum.

Labour’s young warriors stand behind Corbyn – well, mostly

Five young Labour activists – all of whom voted for Jeremy Corbyn and back the grassroots revival – talk about the party, their politics and why they joined. They don’t want to see the social change that Labour will deliver.” The charges of antisemitism within the party have been upsetting, he says. Will he be pushing for a people’s vote on Brexit? “I’m proud to have been proved wrong. Born in west London to a midwife and postman, now both retired, she went to the London School of Economics to read social policy and promptly got involved in student activism. Knocking on people’s doors and seeing how you could change people’s minds was really inspiring.” What has she made of the party’s antisemitism crisis? Both her parents, who “met in communist Prague”, work for trade unions and both of her late grandfathers were former trade union general secretaries. “I didn’t think I needed to join Labour as a member, but actually, when Jeremy became leader, I felt really represented. Eight out of 10 Labour party members want to give the public a final say on Brexit. Look at him and his politics and what he says.

Hi, Reddit! I'm excited to do my very first AMA (of course, since I'm anti-censorship, I prefer that to the "AMAA" option). About Me: I’m Nadine Strossen, constitutional law professor and civil liberties activist, and especially eager to answer questions about the topic of my new book*—HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship—*and about ANYTHING else! I served as President of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) for 18 years (1991-2008), and I’m now on the national advisory boards of the ACLU, EPIC (Electronic Privacy Information Center), FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education), and Heterodox Academy. I am an impassioned defender of free speech and academic freedom, which are embattled now as always; experience convinces me that these freedoms are essential for advancing “liberty and justice for all,” as well as any other cause. So that’s my favorite topic, but as a free speech absolutist, OF COURSE I welcome questions about any other topic too!

‘Occupy Ice’: activists blockade Portland building over family separations

An occupation of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) building in Portland attracted more protesters on Wednesday, growing from a rally in response to the Trump administration policy of separating parents from children at the southern border. Kingston Hall, home to politics, religion and women’s activism

In its prime, the estate may have included up to 1,600 acres in rural Somerset County. Rough shape Theiss purchased the property in 2015. As the owner of a historic home, he said he was interested in retaining the original character of the era when the house was built, while restoring and modernizing it for 21st century life. In the early 1660s, a man named Robert King settled near King's Creek in Somerset County. According to an article written Elizabeth B. Warbasse, who with her husband Paul Warbasse, purchased Kingston Hall and lived there several decades, Thomas King Carroll was subsequently adopted and raised at Kingston Hall as his grandfather's heir, in lieu of King's daughter. Indeed, Thomas King Carroll inherited in 1818. Among her notable accomplishments was advocating to President Lincoln a land siege of Vicksburg, which despite initial skepticism, ultimately proved a wise move when the town surrendered in 1963, according to National Register documentation Returning home after serving as governor, Thomas King Carroll devoted the next few years to attempting to keep Kingston Hall in the family. In 1851 Dennis's son, George Robertson Dennis, inherited Kingston Hall. He had the 16-foot table in the dining room -- formerly the kitchen area -- built from a tree that had grown on the property near the house. The two-story 18th century kitchen is a second important dependency at Kingston Hall."

Will shift from Hong Kong politics to social activism give Occupy poster boy Joshua...

Once the most promising political party for young Hongkongers, Demosisto is going back to its roots in social activism following a shutdown in its election paths and a change in leadership. The new leader of the party, Ivan Lam Long-yin, admitted he had inherited a tough task from his predecessors. “I am not like them, who can be influential in what they have to say,” Lam said, referring to former chairman Nathan Law Kwun-chung and Joshua Wong, two of Demosisto’s most well-known faces and poster boys of the 2014 Occupy movement. Ivan Lam Long-yin, Demosisto leader “I think everyone knows what the reality is like,” Lam said. Law, who was the group’s only representative in Legco, was disqualified last year for taking his oath in an improper manner. Demosisto standing committee member Agnes Chow Ting was also barred from entering the Legco by-election in March, as a returning officer ruled the group’s call for Hong Kong’s self-determination had contravened the Basic Law, the city’s mini-constitution. If the group had changed its manifesto for a ticket to future elections, Lam said it would have disappointed supporters. On Demosisto’s involvement in future protests, Lam said members would have to be more careful. Lam and 12 other activists were given jail sentences of eight to 13 months for unlawful assembly last August. Timeline April 2016: Demosisto was founded with a mission to achieve democratic self-determination in Hong Kong Sept 2016: Chairman Nathan Law Kwun-chung was elected as a lawmaker with over 50,000 votes July 2017: Law was disqualified by the court over his improper oath-taking at Legco’s inaugural meeting in October 2016 Jan 2018: Agnes Chow Ting was banned from running in the March by-election on the grounds of the party’s “unconstitutional” calls for self-determination May 2018: Law stepped down as chairman and the post was succeeded by Ivan Lam Long-yin.

Littlefield: ‘The Heritage’ Offers Incisive Look At Politics, Patriotism And Activism In Sports

The military was using sports to sell the business of war." Bryant’s book, "The Heritage," is not. Their challenge, as Bryant sees it, is to pass along to their younger counterparts "the heritage," a sense of the tradition represented by such activists as Jackie Robinson, Tommy Smith, John Carlos, Muhammad Ali and, more recently, Colin Kaepernick and LeBron James, among others. One triumph of Bryant’s contention is his recognition that none of the carriers of the heritage is perfect. But imperfect as they are, the men and women Bryant cites have embraced the opportunity to stand for something greater than the accumulation of wealth. They have seen that the injunction to "shut up and dribble" comes from a mindset perfectly comfortable with the fact that "sporting events were now political, selling touchdowns and beer, three-pointers and home runs, but also fidelity to police and military and to a point of view that accepted the American government’s war on terror." In other words, "shut up and dribble" means the players should keep their politics out of sports, but the introduction of political propaganda by team owners, the U.S. military and Madison Avenue should be swallowed whole and understood as something other than politics, because according to those producing and endorsing the message, it’s patriotism. Lots of people watching the games probably take for granted the propaganda to which Bryant and some of the enlightened players object. It also makes more likely — and more deadly — the ongoing victimization of minority citizens by those allegedly protecting and serving all citizens. But to ignore the connections he painstakingly demonstrates and to contend that the business of the pro athlete is merely to entertain and enjoy the benefits of the job, that they should be content to be, as Bryant puts it, "greenwashed," is to endorse the diminished humanity of not only the athletes Bryant references, but all of the people who watch them.

Pence Is Trying to Control Republican Politics. Trump Aides Aren’t Happy.

In addition to addressing dozens of party events in recent months, Mr. Pence has effectively made himself the frontman for America First Policies, an outside group set up to back Mr. Trump’s agenda. And Mr. Pence has worked insistently to shape Mr. Trump’s endorsements, prodding him in the contests for governor of Florida and speaker of the House, among others. And Mr. Pence has been intimately involved in planning for the 2020 campaign: He joined Mr. Trump for the meeting where the president told Brad Parscale, a digital strategist in the 2016 election, that he would manage the 2020 race. Mr. Pence recently abandoned an attempt to hire Jon Lerner, a Republican pollster close to Mr. Ayers, as a national security aide, after Mr. Trump discovered Mr. Lerner had helped lead attacks on him in the 2016 election. Two senior White House officials said the Lerner episode made Mr. Trump more acutely aware of what these aides described as Mr. Pence’s empire-building. Mr. Ayers again unsettled skeptics in the West Wing this month by poaching a politically savvy aide to Mr. Trump, William Kirkland, to join the Pence team. “The vice president’s political and fund-raising travel advances the president’s agenda by aiding targeted candidates and committees during the midterms, which is what the president asked us to do,” Ms. Farah said. Mr. Pence counseled the president to let congressional Republicans work things out on their own, according to Republicans close to the White House and congressional leaders. Advisers to Mr. DeSantis remain optimistic that Mr. Trump will intervene again in the race, despite internal resistance. “And the president needs that.”
