Andy Samberg & Sandra Oh Won’t Talk Politics At The 2019 Golden Globes, But...

Trae Patton/NBC The Oscars still don't have a host after the Kevin Hart debacle, but the Golden Globes, which air this Sunday, Jan. 6, have two of the best: Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh. Oh, whose first hosting gig ever is this Sunday's Globes, added that even though they don't have any plans to discuss politics on the Golden Globes stage, that doesn't mean nobody will. And that's something Oh is completely embracing. You make it an open and safe place for whoever wants to use that platform to speak." "I want to focus on [real change] 'cause people can pooh-pooh Hollywood all they want — and there is a lot to pooh-pooh, sure — but we also make culture," she said. Kevin Winter/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images Samberg is a great host, something that really came through when he hosted the Emmys in 2015. He is currently filming the sixth season of Brooklyn Nine Nine, which airs on NBC on January 10. Samberg won a Golden Globe in 2014 for his work on the show. Meanwhile, Oh just finished filming Season 2 of her hit show Killing Eve, for which she nominated for a Globe this year. With resumés like that, it's obvious that these Golden Globes will be a night fans won't want to miss, whether politics are involved or not.

Oscar’s Political Dilemma: How Left Is Too Left?

Any awards release with political overtones faces a conundrum: To win the Academy Award, it must court Hollywood liberals, which can mean alienating the ticket-buying public at large. That's when news spread that the movie had omitted a real-life scene: Armstrong planting the American flag on the moon. Right-wing outrage was immediate and helped ding the picture at the box office, where it failed to draw a crucial male demographic and earned a muted $44 million domestically. What's intriguing in this isn't just how politics suddenly and explosively intersected with an awards-season release, it's how the studio failed to punch back. Universal execs could have argued that the film is a celebration of an American hero; they could even have offered to screen the movie at the White House (a risky strategy, admittedly, if the president didn't end up liking it). In several tight best picture contests, the more overtly liberal contender won. Deer Hunter won best picture. This year, several liberal-minded pictures will jostle for an edge, and that means they'll have to underline their politics without alienating ticket buyers. The same is true of Universal's Green Book, which opened Nov. 16. While a liberal message clearly gives a movie an edge, how much of an edge is unclear.

Inclusivity Reigned at the Oscars. Except When It Didn’t

That’s how it was at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday night, when The Shape of Water took the Best Picture award at the end of an evening that was studiously not about the issues that have dominated Hollywood over the course of the past few months—except when it was. After all, at times this year’s Oscars seemed a tribute to an imagined past Oscars of the mind, and then at times they seemed something radical and new. I missed the relentless satiric mind of past Oscar host Chris Rock as Kimmel made a joke about the 2000 film What Women Want, or joked about a “tweetstorm from the President’s toilet.” Read more: See All the Winners of the 2018 Oscars His most urgently beat drum was the idea that the deliverer of the shortest Oscar speech would win a Jet-Ski. For viewers at home, a host with moral authority—someone to have done as much to contextualize Judd, Sciorra, and Hayek Pinault—might have been nice. No show needs to address the President, but no show can be apolitical. The Oscars as a ceremony basically tried to be, but its performers, presenters, and winners rejected it, and that’s to their credit. Oldman’s counterpart, Frances McDormand, did too. It was a signal to viewers at home, too. No matter—it reached even some viewers jaded by McDormand’s omnipresence these past months.) “I wish I was a woman, I really do,” Kimmel said, taking the stage after McDormand’s speech.

Fashion meets politics at the Oscars

HOLLYWOOD, California (WABC) -- The focus on fashion is always intense on Oscar's red carpet, but during this awards season when a fashion statement can be used to make a political point, the decision about what to wear Sunday takes on even greater significance. The world's longest runway ends on Sunday night after the stars have walked many miles of red carpet over so many months. At The New York Film Critics, I asked comic, Tiffany Hadish, what kind of statement her dress made. She let me know it was one of success, "This is a success dress, baby. I only dress for success. She ready! Success dress!" "We haven't heard of anybody planning on wearing all black, although I'm sure some people will because it's flattering, but it's not going to be a political statement when people wear black this time around." Like black, bling never goes out of style. "I love sketching because it feels, um, ya know, it's just a quick gesture, I color it in really quick and then I love that, like, a week later it's on the red carpet."

We Award President Trump And His Cabinet Some “Alternative” Oscars

The newly appointed President seems obsessed with cartoonish depictions of gold and wealth. In fact, we all know President Trump dreams of gold, just take one look at this lavish apartment. He’s purported to be a man of great taste, perhaps even the greatest taste. No one has better taste than him. Except, that’s not exactly true. Somehow President Trump has amassed a cabinet of absolutely underqualified and deplorable people in a sad attempt to “drain the swamp.” Now, we know the press isn’t allowed to sit with Sean Spicer, but we couldn’t resist sharing some Oscar fever with the new White House administration. As you’ll see in the video above, we’ve taken some time to create and award some Alternative Oscars just in time for this Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards. Congratulations to all the winners, especially Mike Pence who looked absolutely shocked to hear that he had won the Alternative Oscar for Best Actor.
