A one-time Senate aide to Joe Biden, Tara Reade, claims that Biden sexually assaulted her in the spring of 1993, at a time when Biden was the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Biden, who served as Vice President 2009-2017, is now the presumptive Presidential nominee of the Democratic Party.
The Reade accusation appears roughly two and a half years after the creation of the #MeToo hashtag. In October 2017, actress Alyssa Milano tweeted, “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted, write ‘Me Too’ as a reply to this tweet.” Many women did and have continued to do much the same in various ways ever since, and many powerful men who have assaulted them have sustained the consequences of the fact that victims are telling their stories.
With regard to Biden, other women before Ms Reade have complained of sexual harassment. Biden’s response has been that he is a “tactile” person, and that he is learning to be respectful of private spaces. But Reade is the apparently the first to claim that Biden touched her genitals without consent.
The Thing to Know:
Alyssa Milano of all people has weighed in on the Reade accusations with sympathy for Biden. In a recent interview she said, “I just don’t feel comfortable throwing away a decent man that I’ve known for 15 years in this time of complete chaos without there being a thorough investigation.”
