A new poster series examining Cuban political history is on display at the Goodnow Library in Sudbury. Stephen Lewis, a retired union leader who organized the show, has 8,000 posters in his personal collection.
SUDBURY – Stephen Lewis encourages everyone to visit Cuba, but he has a pretty good alternative if they can’t.
Lewis, a retired union leader, has a new exhibit of Cuban posters on display on the first floor of the Goodnow Public Library on Concord Road for the month of October. Selected from his personal collection of 8,000, the brightly colored posters range from film posters to support for the 1959 revolution that swept Fidel Castro into power.
“Some of my posters go back a century ago. It’s amazing that some of the posters are still relevant today,” said Lewis, of Malden.
In 1959, Cubans revolted against dictator Fulgencio Batista, with the broad support of most peasants and workers. During and after the revolution, many Cuban artists turned to the medium of poster art to create powerful images that reflected the changes occurring in Cuban society.
