NILES, Ohio (WYTV) – It’s been a long summer for people in Niles. In recent months, the city has seen former mayors sent to jail and new community leaders emerge.

Sheri Smith was elected and sworn in as Niles’ Second Ward Councilwoman on Wednesday. Residents hope that’s the end of this summer of politics.

“This summer was really one for the books, I think,” Nancy Iezzi-Dom said.

On May 11, former mayor Ralph Infante was sentenced to 10 years in prison on 22 different counts, including theft.

“I think it was a crazy summer but I think we’re going to do better,” Connie Gatta said. “I think we already are doing better.”
