Candidates put politics on parade in Buena Vista

BUENA VISTA — Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine said the upcoming election comes down to whether the country is “for all” when it comes to jobs, health care and education.

Republican challenger Corey Stewart said President Donald Trump has improved the economy and needs people like Stewart to help him accomplish his goals that are being obstructed by Democrats.

And Libertarian Matt Waters said the government is too broke to pay for the services Kaine wants, it’s irresponsible to continue to “kick the can down the road” on entitlements and the federal budget should be cut with all options on the table.

The three U.S. Senate candidates made their pitches to a rambunctious crowd of partisans under a pavilion at Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista on Labor Day. The speeches followed a parade and breakfasts, all of which are part of a long tradition that marks the kickoff of election season.
