The Riggs Report: Potholes or politics?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —

California could very well determine the question of whether the Democrats can retake control of the House of Representatives in 2019.

They need to flip 23 seats nationally in order to pull that off, and nine of those seats are being targeted in the Golden State — most of them in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. Included on that list is Rep. Jeff Denham, R-10th District, who represents a swing district in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties.

Recent financial reports indicate strong fundraising by Democratic candidates in those races.

To counter that threat, House Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, of Bakersfield, have scheduled their own fundraising swing throughout the state next month. They’ll be in Sacramento on Sept. 18, with other stops planned in Los Angeles, Orange County and the Silicon Valley.

But money, although important, is not the same as voter turnout.

That’s where Proposition 6 comes in — its purpose is to ask voters to repeal the 12 cent per gallon gasoline tax increase, and a companion 20 cent per gallon tax increase on diesel that were both signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown last year.
