The Story:
The 27th Congressional District in Texas, which consists of a stretch of the state’s gulf coast southwest of Houston, including Corpus Christi, held a special election Saturday to determine who would represent its interests, in the House, in the wake of the resignation this April of Blake Farenthold (R).
Background:
The seat was vacant because in 2015 Farenthold settled a “hostile work environment” lawsuit brought against him by a former staffer, paying her $84,000 of taxpayer’s money, and because in December 2017, as part of the continuing #MeToo wave, this fact became public knowledge.
The winner will serve only until he can be replaced by the winner of November’s election. But the Governor thought it would be wrong to leave the 27th unrepresented during the intervening months, given a new hurricane season and the fact that the region is still struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
The Thing to Know:
The winner of the special election, Michael Cloud, is a graduate of Oral Roberts University and is an entrepreneur in the field of advertising and marketing, as proprietor of “Bright Idea Media.”
