Beyond politics and nationalism to morality

According to the Washington Post, approximately 2,000 immigrant children were separated from their parents by our government in the months of April and May due to illegal immigration. At least 100 of these children are 4-years-old or younger.

On Wednesday, President Trump said he would rescind the family separation policy, but the fact is, separation has already happened. Separating immigrant families is beyond politics, it’s beyond national security and it’s beyond the law. Separating immigrant parents and children from one another is a moral issue. It is a moral issue collectively for our society and it is a moral issue for each of us individually.

The basis of American values is the fundamental belief that human beings have certain unalienable rights, basic human rights. Those rights extend beyond our citizenship and should be the value that motivates our behavior as individuals and a country. Regardless of who you are, you will be treated as a human being with dignity and we will not act in ways that violate your humanity. This is central to who we are. If we do not act in line with these values, we are lost as individuals and a country.
