However, ICE apparently has taken steps to reunite families if the parent is to be deported. The CPB fact sheet says ICE and HHS are dedicating a facility in an unknown location to serve as a primary family reunification center if the parent is to be deported.
There’s the scheme we should have expected. They can’t deport them until they get their kids back, but have no system in place to get their kids to them, meaning they are in jail awaiting something that DHS promises is happening, but can’t actually provide any examples of.
So not only is Trump not deporting people right away like Obama was, he is now forcing them to stay in the US even longer due to either incompetence or malice.
It is clear that the administration’s strategy is to deter future immigrants from coming to America by publicly demonstrating that they will be separated from their children. From a Trump tweet on 6/16/18:
