The Pope, Climate Science, and Paris

The Story: 

Pope Francis, who has played an active diplomatic role throughout his four years in that office, addressed the UN Food and Agriculture Organization on Monday, October 16, offering an unequivocal blessing for the Paris Accord, and expressing sadness that “some” have withdrawn.

Religion and Science

His Holiness said that scientific knowledge exists of “how we have to confront the problem” of global warming, and he congratulated “the international community” for having “worked out the legal methods, such as the Paris Accord.”

Pope Francis also said that it is sad that “some have abandoned” the Paris agreement.

The Thing to Know:

There can’t be much doubt as to who “some” are. The U.S. is the only one of the 195 signatories of the Accord to have withdrawn.
